David Tutt, of Yellville, Ark., was shot on the public square, at 6 o'clock p.m., on Friday July 27th, 1865 by James B. Hickok, better known in Southwest Missourias "Wild Bill." The difficulty occurred from a game of cards.
The Hickok-Tutt shooting was the first published account of two men walking toward each other with pistols. The conventional method of dueling had been to stand back to back, walk away from each other a prescribed distance and then turn and fire. Now the Wild West had the first "walk down" or "shoot out."
